«Archaeology of the periphery» — in fact the first major interdisciplinary urban research in the post-Soviet practice. Its format and methodological framework are of particular interest: a conscious choice in favor of an equitable interdisciplinary. Set of six «monodisciplinary» ways in which the study was based, indicated by the acronym SPACE (D): the first letters of English words Sociology, Politics, Architecture, Culture, Economics, Data.
The main subject of study was the industrial-modernist periphery Moscow. This spatial complex was analyzed in the context of a much larger and diverse class of phenomena, namely, a whole range of peripheral and semi-peripheral new urban typologies, the birth of which was the result of global urbanization jump XX century. Catalog these typologies presented and commented on in the introductory part of the research report.
The general trend of the strategic study can be defined as the pursuit of a qualitative renewal of the conceptual apparatus of classical urbanism, built around such reductive concepts as «people», «human resources», «place of employment» and «material needs». In place of the Fordist optics come much more interested, «on» and interactive way of perception of people living in the city as the carriers of certain motivations, cultural archetypes, ideologies, conceptual frames, mental maps and rituals of everyday behavior.
