Polina Alexeenko diploma project, 2022

This thesis project was created within the framework of the absolute building brief and is devoted to the creative and analytical process of creating and researching a sculptural architectural form. The whole process of work was organised around four sequential stages: creating a sculpture based on the principle of pure architectural, but subjective, author's form; exploring the characteristics and features of the resulting sculpture, from spaces to possible fantasy contexts and environments; finding the appropriate architectural context in the city; determining the scale of the sculptural form and its spaces appropriate to the context; and giving the sculpture a function. As the sculpture itself turned out to be quite rich in subjects and spaces, it was decided to give it such a scale that it could become a volume belonging to a person in the city - a large public space. A building-event that combines a set of different spaces and functions. Thus, the resulting sculpture in context acquired the scale typical of a skyscraper, and the site near Moscow City, among other super-high buildings, was chosen to build an understandable and, at the same time, provocative dialogue with the city.
The form-shaping element of the project was the "air" inside the sculpture, its quantity and ratio. This is how the central core appeared - a single public atrium - a place for meetings, recreation, entertainment and observation of the surrounding city, while private functions were hidden in the thickness of the walls limiting the atrium. The walking route includes atrium floors connected by escalators and a Ferris wheel dividing the form into lower and upper parts. In the lower part, the guest can use spaces with functions of theatre, library and museum, while in the upper part, sports, education, offices and housing.
